4. Profiles of genera
Russula and Lactarius are without any doubt the best known genera in the order Russulales, due to their agaricoid habit, the edibility of several species and their very wide diffusion. However, several other genera are today known to be very close to these two, and are hence classified in this order.
In this page we will provide some short notes about each genus, together with some illustration of representative species.

4.9. Russula
The genus Russula is one of the two big agaricoid genera within the order Russulales; hundreds of species have been described from several continents, and many others are still unknown. Many Russula species are also commonly used as food.
Description - The main characters of Russula are...
Being such a vast and diverse genus, Russula has been subdivided in many subgenera, sections and subsections, but we are still far from having a general consensus on it systematics. Among the European monographic treatments of the genus, Romagnesi (1967, 1987) and Sarnari (1998) have proposed original classification schemes which are followed by many people. Among classifications which consider also extra-european, and notably American, species, we present here the classification adopted by Singer (1986) in his treatment of Agaricales s.l.
